Matthew Alex is a twelve year old boy who has recently been diagnosed with not only Autism Spectrum Disorder but Asperger’s Syndrome as well. What is Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome some may ask? Autism (shortened from Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a neurological disability that is usually diagnosed before the age of three. (Mississippi Centers … Autism, 2013) It is likely that one in every eighty-eight children will be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with four out of five being male. (Mississippi Centers … Autism, 2013) Autism Spectrum Disorder can also cause depression, anxiety, obsessions, defiance, and ADHD. {See Exhibit A below} Asperger’s Syndrome is a milder form of the Autism Spectrum Disorder. (Autism Speaks, 2013) Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder usually show early signs by not answering to their name, not making eye contact, repetitive behaviors, avoid playing with other children, showing an obsession to a particular toy or item, not talking, spinning in circles, or repeating words or phrases over and over. Autism Spectrum Disorder has been diagnosed more in the last decade than ever before. An autism awareness center in Grenada County, Mississippi would help parents learn how to help their autistic child, help autistic children learn to cope with everyday life, help autistic children find their exceptional skill and build on it, offer community events, and offer a childcare facility within for autistic children.
