Technology’s Effects on Relationships

Often, when people think of technology, they think of negative effects on relationships. Although there are positives, most surveys and peoples’ opinions consist in supporting this: technology nearly always has a negative effect. Technology has impacted relationships negatively because with dating it blocks out negative or positive emotions when speaking or getting to know someone, with friendships it can cause people to become socially isolated by taking away face to face interaction, and with family it takes away from quality time.

Technology interferes with family because it takes away from quality time. Many adults and even teenage children admit that technology has taken the place of their family time, whether it’s calling or texting a parent to talk to them just because they’re on a different floor, or instead of spending quality time, going off and doing their own thing. Even when families do spend time, it seems to revolve around technology. For instance, family time often consists of going to the movies or watching a movie at home, where talking is prohibited. Even simple ways that technology can affect a child’s school performance can be an effect from the family or affect the family later on.
