I used to work for the Holiday Inn Express as a night auditor. I was working one night and we had a sold out hotel due to a bike race down town. About three am in the morning the power shuts off. As soon as it came on the elevator malfunctioned. Being it was three in the morning, I didn't think it would be good customer service if I woke everyone up at three am just to tell them about the elevator being out of service. I decided to type up a notice and slipped it under every door. As guest started to wake I noticed we had a worse problem then just the lavatory being down. I had handicapped rooms trapped on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. I told them not to panic, then I panicked. I searched every utility room looking for something I could maybe use as a ramp to get these guests down the stairs. I called my dad and the maintenance man. My dad is a really good handy man. They built a wooden ramp that would fit down each flight of stairs. After working together. We were able to get the handicapped guests of their floors safely. I'm nit sure what I would of done if I didn't put together a good team to fix the issue. A few hours later the elevator was fixed and I finally got to go home and get rest.

Rewards in my past job consisted of gift cards and extra time off. We earned these by receiving good customer reviews, hundred percent sell out, and positive corporate reviews. These were extrinsic rewards. I think they are more motivational tactics then intrinsic rewards. Intrinsic rewards are self served. It's rewards employees have to earn and feel with in them, such as a new job skill or knowing they have an increase of responsibility. These can be motivational only if the employee wants them. I don't think an employer would be able to motivate their employees by stating, "let's go learn some new job skills by using new customer service skills!" :D ...but if they say, "you'll get bonus for every positive customer review you get". Extrinsic rewards always win.
