Year round schools

Introduction

Year round schools have a schedule of learning that is interrupted by shorter, more frequent breaks throughout the year as opposed to the conventional long summer vocation. The year round schools operate by spreading the standard number of classes all through the year with instances of added class days (Ruggiero, 12). These schedules have mostly been adopted for younger pupils in middle and elementary schools and this discussion focuses on the effectiveness of the system in achieving the goals of education.

Discussion

The instructional days of year round schools run for ten months with breaks scattered all over the year amounting to two months. The breaks last for about two weeks on a frequent basis so as to compensate for the longer periods of learning. Student enrollment in the year round schools has been on the rise compared to the traditional schools which practice the usual summer vocation that last for several months. From the business perspective all year round school are advantageous because not so many students will be competing to get jobs during the vocation period since students do not go for holidays at the same time. Businesses are also able to provide job opportunities all year round instead of congesting all opportunities during the summer vocation. Year round schools are also advantageous in that students graduate at different times hence reducing the risk of unemployment when all students finish school collectively and all look for employment at the same time.

Year round schools favor business to have employees all year round because of the different vocations compared to traditional schools that have one vocation and therefore businesses suffers as employees withdraw at the same time when vocation is over so they can attend school (Ornstein et al, 520).
