Introduction

a. The Country

The country I’m going to export my bike helmet to is Norway. Norway is situated in the North of the European Continent, its neighbor countries are Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Here is a brief introduction to the countries’ history and the most important political and cultural facts.

Within the last 70 years, Norway went through very different times. In 1940 it was defeated by the Wehrmacht, and remained occupied by the aggressors until the end of World War II in 1945. Thereafter, in times of the arising Cold War, the government of Norway oriented the country towards the western hemisphere and joined the NATO in 1949. These times were also characterized by an ongoing economic upswing. This upswing turned into a boom, when in the 1960s oil was discovered in the Norwegian territorial waters.

Meanwhile, the EU and its predecessor the EG had formed – but without Norway. Though the government made several attempts to lead the country into the EG/EU (the last one in 1994), they failed due to popular votes, that denied them to apply for a membership. Nevertheless, in 1960 Norway was one of the founders of the EFTA, which it still belongs to.

Today, Norway is a parliamentary monarchy, the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the armed forces is King Harald V and the head of government is Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, who was elected in 2005.
