Analysis on Task Environment of Wen Wei Po

1. Target customers

1) Demographic

Wen Wei Po mainly targets readers in upper-middle class with stable income and higher education background. The target customers are largely Chinese people especially who have the mainland background and have business related to mainland.

2) Behavior

Wen Wei Po’s target customers are those who focus and concerned about the mainland China politics, economy, society, education and culture. Wen Wei Po is regarded as a newspaper that supports the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic of China government and reports on issues of politics and China are considered reliable. Some Hong Kong people may have the mainland background or the companies who have the business with mainland need to keep an eye on the current situation of China and they would choose Wen Wei Po.

2. Main competitor – Apple Daily

1) Strength

➢ Big Circulation

Apple Daily was founded by Jimmy Lai Chee Ying on June 20, 1995. Unlike newspapers at that time, it used color printing on all pages of the newspaper and did not allow advertisements covering the complete front page. Since then, it has attracted a large readership. Other newspapers followed suit, and a few were forced to close due to intense competition from Apple Daily. Apple daily is the best-selling newspaper in Hong Kong nowadays. “An apple a day” already becomes a habit in many Hong Kong’s reader mind.

➢ Unique and bold technique to gain readership

Apple Daily makes extensive use of written Cantonese at a time when most Hong Kong newspapers used written vernacular Chinese. It focuses on reporting crime, celebrity news, eroticism, gambling, and drug use. Apple Daily also uncovered many political scandals on celebrities.
