Psychology 348: Assignment

Learning objectives:

* Learn to search for and access relevant peer-reviewed literature regarding interventions for specific psycho-social problems

* To critically engage with the international and South African research literature on psychological interventions that have been conducted to address psycho-social problems that impact the well-being of individuals, groups and communities.

* To identify interventions that are appropriate to dealing with psycho-social problems that impacts the well-being of South Africans.

* To develop critical thinking and academic writing skills

The assignment will consist of a total of 100 marks and will consist of the following steps:

1. Select ONE of the following psycho-social problems: Intimate partner violence; child abuse; childhood obesity in South Africa.

Give a description of the nature, scope and consequences of your selected psycho-social problem. Use at least 5 relevant and recently published literature sources. You must provide (as a separate appendix to your essay) the key words that you have used for this search; the search engines; as well as your research results. (15 marks; 2 – 3 pages)

2. Use Bronfenbrenner’s model to analyse the problem. In your analysis you must identify the risk factors that contribute to the problem at each level of Bronfenbrenner’s model. (20 marks; 3 – 4 Pages).

3. Use the library databases to search the peer reviewed literature. Identify and briefly describe at least five psychological interventions that have been implemented to address the problem that you have chosen as the focus of your assignment. You must provide (as a separate appendix to your essay) the key words that you have used for this search; the search engines; as well as your research results.
