Question 1

This statement which is based on the first page of Communications in Applied Context is explaining how when you get hired on by a company they see that you are qualified, but don’t know how well you work with others or communicate on a regular basis. Getting promoted within your job is usually based on how well you can understand what is being communicated and using the right skills to complete that task. This happens a lot in the work place, in that many people will get hired because of their technical skills, but have a hard time communicating with managers and other co workers. The people that get ahead and get the higher positions are the ones that are constantly communicating questions, concerns and stating objectives.

My dad used to work for Air Canada and was hired on as a crew member in charge of baggage. As he worked there over the years, he saw many problems that were going on between other employees and how it was being dealt with. My dad is very out spoken and brought these issues to management and nothing was done. He kept going to management and communicating these problems and eventually, they hired him on as head of all the baggage and was responsible for over thirty guys on the crew. My dad was well respected after he got hired with his employees and with management. It just shows how important communication skills are within your workplace and how it could improve your job.
