Neosurf

Neosurf, a natural lipid extract surfactant marketed by India, is used to restore pulomonary surfactant activity in premature infants suffering from neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Neosurf contains phospholipids and 2 hudrophobic surfactant associated proteins, SP-B and SP-C. Neosurf is manufactured as a suspension containing 27 milligrams phospholipids per milliliter in 0.1 molar sodium chrolide and 1.5 millimolar calcium chrolide. Neosurf must be kept frozen during its shelf life and can be refrigerated for a period of up to 2 weeks without expireing but can easily be returned to the freezer for further storage. It is intended for careful intratracheal installation, with careful patient monitoring, by qualified neonatal personal. Neosurf is rapidily absorbed and forms an active phospohlipid mono layer at the air tissue interface, which then restores surfactant activity, improves gaseous exchange and decreases alveolar surface tension. Positive results, as indicated by a decrease in oxygen requirements and ventilation parameters, are often obtained withn the first 5-30 mins after the first dose of Neosurf. Careful monitoring and ventilator parameter adjustment is imperitive during this period.

The dosage of Neosurf is 5ml/kg of birth weight. At 27mg phospholipid/ml the dose is 135mg phospholipid/kg of birth weight. To administer Neosurf, remove a vial of Neosurf from the freezer and let it warm to room temperature for 60 minutes, or let a refrigerated vial warm for 20 minutes at room temperature. Alternately a vial can be warmed in the hands for 10 minutes or in warm water for 5 miutes. Do not heat Neosurf above room temperature. If there is any discloration or a marked precipate is present then discard the vial of Neosurf and get another. other materials needed for this procedure are: a sterile syringe, a sterile needle, alcohol wipes, #5 french feeding tube, and sterile scissors. Neosurf is intended for intratracheal...
