Jamestown
Settlers did not know how to farm and hunt; thus they faced hunger, even starvation. Relations with the Powhatan Indians were rocky; sometimes provided food,sometimes kept Jamestown virtually under siege. No gold was found; colonists had no product with which to trade with England for basic necessities they could not produce themselves, things like farm implements, tools, clothes and firearms. Made it very difficult for them to obtain these necessary things until they learned how to grow tobacco, which was valuable and could be traded for things
Why VA Prospered
The growth of the cash crop tobacco helped the colony to prosper; establishment of the House of Burgesses
Tobacco
Tobacco was a cash crop for the colony, essentially making the entire operation incredibly profitable;Virginia's climate was perfect for growing tobacco so colonists were able to easily grow it. The East India company was a major financier in the colony, enticing/sending people over to grow more tobacco.
