In regions all over the globe, both the private and public quarters acknowledge the need for an improved transportation network. They see the capability of smarter railroads to attend to that need. Throughout the caprices of history, geography, money matters and political affairs, some countries, such as Britain, are much beyond along in developing their transportation road and rail network for train commuters, even as others, especially the US, outstrip them in the utilization of rail for cargo transportation (Pearson, 2012). Each could gain a little knowledge from the other. An orchestrated, organized transportation infrastructure and smarter railroads could make the international economy stronger, decrease greenhouse gas emanations, make highways safer and lessen road jamming. A smarter world, in other terms, needs smarter railroads (Arvis, 2011).

Already, trackside gadgets screen acoustic marks, heat and wheel bearing at most American and various European railways. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, read by set infrastructure along the curb, help recognize rail cars, while wireless and video systems offer monitoring of chattels in rail yards (Castells, 2014). However, new business forms and modus operandi are also coming into operation. Commuters can be billed based on actual service. Repairs can be instigated based on precise need forecasts, rather than synchronized schedules. In addition, highly developed video systems can present better security for travelers, rolling stock and goods stowage (Castells, 2014).

Rail systems are one of the industry's initial models of an interconnected structure, but extensive prospects subsist for improvement.
