For the Unit 3 Project, review the text reading on self-concept and then complete the questions below:

1. Describe a time when you tried to bring about a change in your self-concept and were not successful in doing so.

A few years ago, I was in a domestic violence relationship. My self-image was extremely low, as was my view of the situation I was in. My two young sons and I endured various forms of abuse from physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, and forced imprisonment from the boy’s father. No matter how hard I tried to change myself and the situation I found us to be in…Nothing seem to matter or make a difference. My fear of him killing me kept my immediate reactions at bay for a few years. Finally, it took a near death experience to remove us from this devastating situation. As time passed within this relationship, my view of myself diminished to less nothing. I began to see myself as the abuser did someone whom was weak and insignificant.

2. Summarize the guidelines for improving self-concept in our textbook and explain how each might apply to a change in self-concept.

Make a firm commitment to personal growth one must do more than just being open to others, one must know that part of personal growth is change and welcome such change. Personal growth offers a change within our self-concepts if we are willing to allow such change. If we can get past the fear of the unknown, then might we realize a difference and change within our own self-concepts.

Gain and use knowledge to support personal growth allows for change and the skills to do so. Acquiring knowledge of how we view ourselves under social constructed perceptiveness allows for our own insight to critical thinking of social perceptions. Once we see how others see ourselves then might we accept or reject those outwardly perceptions which will allow us to change our self-concept utilizing outwardly tools and skills.
