More and more car companies are earning bad reputations for their unreliable service in car making. This has caused many car companies to lose money and their customers. Volvo thought of a way to keep their cars more reliable and safe by using Big data. Big Data is a term used to describe a high volume of data that is too enormous to process using an average database. Quantum (2010).

An example of Big Data could be terabytes of data consisting of billions of information from different resources such as the internet, social media, data from a cell phone carrier and etc. After Volvo Car corporation departed from their parent relationship with ford in August 2010, Volvo decided to use Big Data to make it marks with technology and design an IT infrastructure. Volvo found a successful way to use the cloud network to its advantage. Volvo is now using the cloud network to evaluate its vehicles.

Volvo cars are equipped with sensors and CPU’s embedded throughout the car. These sensors assist Volvo in evaluating and monitoring car activities. These activities include air bag functionality, brake functionality and etc. Volvos can even evaluate how well a car responded to an accident. Information collected from the CPU’s and sensors are then rolled into Volvo’s Data warehouse for storage. Business cloud 9 (2010)

Once the data has been stored into Volvo’s data warehouse, someone will analyze this information and use the information for improvement and research. Volvo went with Microsoft data management because they felt that Microsoft was an excellent leader in collaboration tools. Most companies are using collaboration tools such as SharePoint. Strader. (2011).

Big data strategy gives Volvo a competitive edge because Volvo became the first car company to be able to predict and evaluate defects. This really helps Volvo ensure the safety of their customers. Big data is allowing Volvo...
