Introduction
Google, first incorporated in California in 1998 (Google, 2013), is a company with strong knowledge sharing strategies. Efficient knowledge sharing strategies are an inexpensive way to overcome barriers and remain relevant in the marketplace. Starting by examining Googles’ purpose and external competitive context and current state of knowledge sharing will give a picture of where the company’s strategy currently stands. Then by discussing recommended knowledge sharing strategies, how the organization’s knowledge sharing approach might be improved and better aligned, identification of technology, human resource, and routines and the process elements to aid in this alignment could help Google to widen the gap between themselves and their competition.
Purpose and Knowledge External Competitive Context
Since inception, Google’s mission has been to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful (Google Corporate Information, 2013). This means that Google’s main purpose for existence is knowledge management. By not only factoring in the appearance of a key word, but also the importance of the page, the key word in on Google has made the retrieval of information much more streamlined. Everything Google does is to make knowledge accessible when it is needed.
Google has a wide range of external competitive factors. Other knowledge management companies such as Yahoo and Bing are always trying to find a way to get ahead. Google has to stay strong to their original vision of uniting the world’s knowledge while making it easily accessible.
