Unit 1 Assignment

Introduction

In this document I will attempt to compare two types of software; the well-known proprietary software such as Microsoft SQL Server and the not so well-known open source type of software like MySQL server and Oracle.

Proprietary/Open source

The best place to start when comparing Proprietary and Open Source software is the Pricing or the way you obtain and use the software. With proprietary software you will often receive Trial or an offer to try free for 10-30 days then you are prompted to purchase the software. With open source software you are never expected to pay for the software but occasionally you will find links on the developers website to donate to help pay for costs or simply because they don’t receive payment for their hard work. There are anomalies to the donation style open source which are called trust ware or something of the like, where they will have a button to donated or contribute to the developer.

Advertising

Microsoft SQL Server is a difficult application to find information about for a comparison as Microsoft likes to talk up their products with up talk as most proprietary companies often do instead of just saying what the product does, they use words like “Self-service business intelligence tools out-of-the-box” (Microsoft, 2013).

If you want to actually learn about what the product does don’t use a Microsoft website, go to a third party arbitrary website like Cnet or the like.

Open source companies have a different approach to advertising as they are not looking to sell the product their descriptions seem to be a bit less arrogant and a great deal more descriptive and informative as to what you should expect the product to perform. Normally when you visit an open source website you will usually first encounter a comparative chart or at the very least a very descriptive explanation of what the product includes and what it does.
