The Cask of Amontillado

Nowadays, most of people in the United State of America either read a book or watch a movie at their free time, for entertainment purposes. Books and movies have some similarities and differences. Some people argue that books are better than movies and vice versa. When we read a book we create a visual image in our heads, whereas when we watch a movie the image is already created. I think that we see expression on a movie, but we can feel that expression in a book. However, this is a controversial issue that has been discussed a lot lately. In this essay, I will compare and contrast reading and watching a story of “The Cask of Amontillado. Reading the short story of “The Cask of Amontillado” is more descriptive, I can understand the feelings, emotions, and expressions.

Watching “The Cask of Amontillado”, I get see what the director wants me to see. I hear the characters' voices through actors' interpretations of their lines. I see landscapes and castle through a set designer's imagination. But reading “The Cask of Amontillado” I determine whose Fortunato and the narrator (Montresor) look like and sound like. I can also relate to the characters in my own mind. I get to determine how to interpret what they say. I find that “The Cask of Amontillado” is not a story where you speed read, skimming the lines for a quick revelation of the plot. Reading also improve and increase my vocabulary than watching. After the reading I learned vocabularies such as clamor, connoisseur, obstinate, virtuoso…. But from the other hand reading “The Cask of Amontillado” took me few hours while watching only took me about ten minutes. But while reading, I can stop for a little bit to think, but a movie is just played, without any reflection, and deeper indication of my feelings. During watching I can lie, eat, sit or do some different things, but when I’m reading I cannot wash dishes or eat. When reading The Cask of Amontillado, I will be honest I didn't...
