Employee Performance based on Initial Perceptions

We more often than not tend to form impressions and perceptions (an idea, feeling, or opinion about something or someone, especially one formed without conscious thought or on the basis of little evidence) about both animate and inanimate characters we come across in life. These feelings reflect in our attitude and behavoiur towards these characters when addressing them. It may in turn influence the magnitude of what to expect as we come into contact with them. In the same vein, the choice an individual makes in choosing an organization/ company to work with may be based on certain predisposed ideas he/ she might have formed about the organization. Thus, expectation of what type of working conditions or services to be received is built on these notions. The extent to which expectations are met to confirm perceptions hitherto formed by the individual may go a long way to affect performance. This project therefore seeks to establish perceptions (predisposed notion about the organization) as one of the factors that influence performance of employees in their initial encounter with their places of work. The extent to which this factor impacts on the general settlement process of the new recruit into the workplace will also be examined.

Factors Affecting Perception of new recruits in their place of work

The factors affecting perception include our previous life experiences and our emotional state. For many reasons, but mainly for survival, people choose to work in order to earn a living: either through self employment or working with an organization. The choice lies within the individual as to which organization to work with when there are many options to choose from, whereas others are forced to take whatever is available when the options are few.
