1) What is Literature? Give two examples

Literature is a way for people to express their feelings and emotions to their audiences through many ways. Literature can be in the form of a story, a play, and a poem or even through music. A good work of literature not only tells a story but is so descriptive that the person reading or watching, actually feels like they are living in that moment and experiencing it for themselves.

A great example would be the song “Stan” by Eminem. Although vulgar, the lyrics are effective in getting a message across to his fans in a way they can relate to. He used this form of literature to send a message of hope in response to disturbing fan mail he received. An icon such as he could not possibly respond to each and every “troubled” fan that thought they had something in common, however he found a creative method to express his concern and attempt to provide hope for those who have given up.

Another example would be the book series “50 shades of grey” written by E.L. James. Each page has such a description that it’s almost like you are there and seeing what the characters are seeing and feeling. This piece of literature provides the reader an opportunity to experience a fantasy that they wouldn’t ever dream of acting out in real life.

2) How is the literary use of language different from our everyday use of language?

Our everyday language is sufficient to communicate thoughts and opinions, in other words it gets our message across such as the use of texting, emails and verbal conversations. The literary use of language is much more colorful and descriptive, kind of like putting a melody to the words. It allows the reader or listener to not only understand and experience the story, but also to feel the emotion as if it were happening to them.

3) How does Literature broaden and deepen one's experience? Do you agree with this viewpoint?
