The use and flow of Information in an Organization

Information flows in different directions and different means: formally and informally, downward, upward and even horizontally through various levels. Without this much needed information organizations would most likely crumple as this info is required to be able to run the everyday operations of a business. Information consists of data, specifics, imaginations, thoughts, opinions and cultural values in a different range of ways that includes information written out, information by way of audio or by way of video, and all electronic processes like company emails, etc.

The psychologist's description of the flow of information is the basic human need to be aware of things going on around him or her. Some philosophers relate it as the flow of information is the basic right of human beings and allows him or her to actively partake in society, broadening their knowledge and their basic learning process. The flow of information within an organization allows employees to make decisions on issues that affect them and the organization that employs them. This most “basic human need” is an integral part of a company’s capability to make day-to-day decisions when it comes to that company's future. Without this capability an organization would not be able to continue to exist in the business world. The importance of the flow of information to an organization is instrumental to their survival in the business world.

The first example of flow within an organization would be downward flow. This is the simplest flow of information within a business. This information comes from the top like the business owner or CEO of a company. This information then trickles down to lower levels within an organization like supervisors or managers. Ways that this information is related is through giving oral instructions to lower levels, by giving oral presentations, having meetings...
