A Musical Life

Music is something that joins people of all walks of life together, no matter their background, race, or social class. Music is something that has a large place in my heart. I have been a music lover for as long as I can remember, and it is something that I have in common with all of my good friends, my family, and my boyfriend. My children are also becoming huge music lovers as well, which makes my heart sing.

The music that I most associate with childhood would have to be “classic rock” or “hair bands”. This music makes me want to sing along, dance around, and drive fast if I am in the car. My childhood was one that was not ideal, my parents fought constantly, my dad was/is an alcoholic, and there were frequent parties at my house or at other people’s houses that we attended. My parents took us with them most everywhere they went, and this was the music that was always playing. My favorite song, at around age five, was Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me” (1987). This is not anything that any five year old should know every word to, yet I did. My mom wore out the cassette tape, playing it in the car over and over again.

My adolescence was filled with drama, sadness, and many hours spent listening to music by myself, trying to drown out everything that was wrong in my life. My parents had divorced, my dad had left us for his mistress, my mom was remarrying, and I was just plain unhappy. I listened to a lot of country music, and the one song that comes to mind is The Judds’, “Grandpa”. I remember crying my eyes out over this song and the lyrics, taking them very much to heart, especially the line “did daddies really never go away” (O’Hara, ND). Once I hit the age of sixteen, life had gotten better and I loved spending time with my friends. My music taste changed just a little bit, and one of my favorite songs from that time period is Cross Canadian Ragweed’s “Carney Man” (Canada & McClure, 2002). This was a song that was...
