Company Information

The purpose of our research study was to explore how Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. handles their human resource practices. Wegmans is a family owned supermarket chain in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Wegmans currently has 83 stores located in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. Their headquarters is located in Rochester, New York. Wegmans has appeared in Fortunes annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list since 1998. It has ranked among the top 10 for eight consecutive years. Its success has been recognized by the Food Network as the “Best Grocery Store” in 2007 and Consumer Reports ranked it the top large grocery chain in 2012.

Founded in 1916, John Wegman opened the “Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company.” Since then Wegmans has continued to expand and rise to the top of the grocery industry. Danny Wegman is the current CEO, with his daughter Colleen Wegman serving as the president. Danny’s father, Robert, passed away in 2006. Robert Wegman essentially put Wegmans on the map, commonly said to be a pioneer in the retail food business. In 1968, the company began to expand outside of Rochester, opening a store in Syracuse. The first store outside of New York opened in 1993 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Wegmans currently employs roughly 44,000 people and brought in $6.25 billion in revenue in 2012.
