Mini Case Study on Motivation
“I’m going to recommend you to head the new branch in Cambodia. I want to run the decision by you before I submit your name to top management. ” Greg informed Steven.
“The team is Cambodia is not going to be easy to motivate. They set the sales target really high for Cambodia, and with only 2 people in the Cambodia team, we won’t be able to achieve the target, no matter how hard we try. The logistics team supporting Cambodia in Singapore is also very frustrated with the poor phone communications with Cambodia. Being their manager for the new Cambodia branch would only mean I have to handle all the hard work. Also, if I take on the leadership role, I would have little time for my family. With the level of effort in starting up, the additional allowance for going to Cambodia is only $400/month. It doesn’t justify.” These thoughts were running within Steven.
“I’m very sorry I am not interested to take up the position of manager”, Steven said firmly to his boss. “I enjoy continuing working in Singapore. Boss, you should look to promote other colleague instead.”
Steven’s boss, Greg, was stunned. Compared to the rest, Steven is most responsible and always deliver consistent results. He got along with everyone in the office. Even the top management in headquarters liked him. When headquarters informed to promote someone to head the Cambodia branch, Greg was sure Steven is the best person to choose to be promoted to manager of the department. With the additional salary, he could not understand why Steven does not want to be promoted.
