Testing a Theory

I would have to say that work is the place I test theories the most. I run CNC lathes and most of the theories I test are in the process of making the parts I produce. Before I can run any part I need to write a program for the machine to follow, even though the machine should theoretically run exactly as the program was written, that’s not always the case that is when I need to test my theories.

Most of the research I do for this is from previous experience. Perhaps I have had a similar problem before; I search the data banks of my mind to figure out possible fixes for the problem. The bad thing about this is sometimes the fix for one is not the fix for the other. On to phase two, my handy dandy machinist handbook which gives me the different M codes or G codes the machine uses to run. All machines use these, but one machine may use a different code than another, so I check to see if my codes are correct, if all is ok here, time to see if I have the program in the proper order. I go through this making sure to test each theory by running the program over and over until I get a part that is to the exact specs of the customer.

I figure this is pretty much the same methods used by a psychologist in the fact that he would observe test observe test until the desired result was achieved. As in the words spoken earlier the fix for one is not always the fix for the other. Different theories and different study is needed to achieve the goal.

I am not sure of what I would of done different as I find this step by step approach to be the most effective in what I do.

In conclusion I believe that most theories can be tested in this way to find a suitable outcome. There may be faster ways but I believe in being thorough, to me the slow and steady get the...
