Police Organization Paper

The state levels of policing consist of State Troopers which have jurisdiction over the whole state. State Police are also known as highway patrol. State Police affect our society by enforcing speed limits on the highway, going to domestics, and all other calls within the state they operate in. Local police departments enforce laws and regulations within the city limits. They enforce the speed limit in their own local municipality. Local departments do everything state police officers do just on a smaller scale. City police departments do not have full legal jurisdictional flexibility throughout the state.

There are many federal law enforcement agencies. They each have different responsibilities within the law enforcement field. The Federal Bureau of Investigations also known as the “FBI” serves as both a federal criminal investigative body and an internal intelligence agency. The FBI has investigative jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crime (Quick facts). The U.S. Patriot Act increased the powers allotted to the FBI, especially in wiretapping and monitoring of Internet activity. One of the most controversial provisions of the act is the so-called sneak and peek provision, granting the FBI powers to search a house while the residents are away, and not requiring them to notify the residents for several weeks afterwards. Under the Patriot Act's provisions, the FBI also resumed inquiring into the library records of those suspected of terrorism (San Francisco Chronicle). The FBI is one of the most diverse organizations within the federal government.

The United States Marshal’s Service is responsible for apprehending wanted fugitives, transferring prisoners, and protecting endangered federal witnesses. The U.S. Marshals is the oldest law enforcement agency in the United States (national archives).
