Strategic Direction
• Qantas Airways Ltd – both including and not including its successful low cost carrier subsidiary Jetstar – is, by some distance, the largest airline in Australia. It is, however, experiencing growing competition and therefore thinning profit margins on its major and previously most profitable routes, including the ‘kangaroo route’ to the UK and the trans-Pacific route to the US. Qantas’ major problem is competition within its ranks, with Jetstar growing considerably faster than the Qantas brand itself. Qantas is in need of a long-term plan in order to protect its legacy brand and reduce its emphasis on its low cost carrier.
