The Miracle Worker

1. Why is the movie entitled “The Miracle Worker?”

Helen Keller is a blind and deaf child. She always has tantrums whenever she can’t get what she wants, but the problem is that her parents and the people around her cannot understand the messages she wanted to convey. For Helen to stop her bad temper, they will just give her a piece of candy. Helen’s parents find her too problematic for their family; they feel very hopeless about her situation, so they tried to find a teacher that would teach her proper etiquettes and suffice her with knowledge that she needs in order to fix her attitude and in order for her to live a somehow ordinary life. Anne Sullivan is Helen Keller’s teacher. It was really a rough start for Anne in teaching Helen, but, she did not gave up with Helen’s situation, she was really determined and persevering to teach her the sign language for her to communicate with them and she was more than willing to let her realize that everything that she feels have a meaning and she could spell it out. Anne believed in Helen’s ability, that she is just deaf and blind, but there is nothing wrong with her head – Helen is a smart child. She never stopped believing and hoping that someday Helen would learn all the things that she is teaching her. Anne Sullivan is the miracle worker. Despite Helen’s impairments, Anne still managed to teach her language and life lessons that Helen holds unto ‘til she grew up.

2. Who are the characters in the movie? Give their distinct characteristics

* Helen Keller – She has a hearing and visual impairment. She was called the “wild child” by her father and was also considered to be hopeless by the people around her. She tends to have tantrums whenever she can’t get the things she wants, and she doesn’t observe proper eating etiquettes.
