Cheerleading Is More Than You Think

I can feel the adrenaline rushing through my body. I am standing at the corner of the matt at Regionals. “Northboro-Southboro T-hawks, you may take the floor.” We run on to the matt screaming and cheering. When we get to the designated spots, we look down at the floor and wait for the judges to take some time to finish up their score sheets for the previous team. “ Northboro-Southboro T-hawks, you may begin,” we hear the announcer say. Shortly after that we hear our music start and we begin our routine. Some of our stunts fall, but we do great with our jumps, dance, and were extremely loud and clear during our cheer. Throughout the whole routine we were tight and clean. After we finished, we ran off the matt and went to buy food. My team only went to Regionals once, but we did not make it to Nationals because a lot of our stunts fell. Our best sections were jumps, dance, and cheer.

Cheerleading is not what most people think it is. Most people think that cheer is just dancing, yelling, and jumping, but it is also gymnastics. But that is not what I’m trying to say. What I am trying to say is that cheerleading is more than that.

When I started cheer, I was in sixth grade. I had only been living in Northborough since fourth grade and I barely had any friends or knew that many people. But when I got to my first practice the other girls made me feel comfortable. I knew then that I wanted to be just like them. They were friendly and hardworking. Soon I developed more muscle in my arms and legs. I was just like them.

Some people think that cheerleading is not a sport, but we do just as much work as other athletes. AYF cheer teams attend 4 competitions, 3 important ones and 1 just to get the feel of what it is like to go to the important competitions. The 1st competition that you go to is “Fun Comp”. You go and show your routine, then get judged for it, but your scores don’t matter for anything. Then you go to locals...
