Wireshark Introduction and Examining Wireless Frames
Introduction
In this lab we will be learning what Wireshark is and what it is used for. We will also get to use it on a sample data stream and be able to gain some first-hand knowledge of how to use Wireshark and what it is used for. It is used to see what types of packets are being sent and received in data streams. It can also be used to see where some data problems are occurring and possible ways to fix it.
Specific questions from the tutorial
Guidelines: Answer all questions in full college-level sentences and paragraphs.
1. What type of software is Wireshark? Why is this important to users of Wireshark?
Wireshark is a data stream capture and analyzer program. Wireshark is important to users because it can be used to examine what is going on with packets and gives a lot of different useful information for users to be able to diagnose and fix any problems or prevent potential problems.
2. When analyzing a network capture, what data appears in each of Wireshark’s three panes?
The top frame or packet list pane holds information about the packets in the captured data stream. The middle frame holds information about the selected packets from the top frame in a tree view format and is called the tree view pane. The bottom pane or byte view pane show more specific information about the bytes contained within each packet.
3. What does a display filter do, and when would you use one?
A display filter filters out specific data or color codes the packets according the rules that are applied. It can be used to find more specific pieces of data if needed in order to diagnose problems.
4. What does the protocol column show, and how is it related to the Wireshark’s other panes?...
