Guns are a part of almost everyone’s lives, especially in the south. People hunt, sport shoot, and depend on their weapon of choice to protect their families from intruders. With the economy the way it is, home invasions and other crimes are at an all time high. Although weapons aren’t allowed on college campuses, more students would feel safer if they were allowed to carry a weapon with them. The shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois have placed campus security and college students on high alert. Self defense, the right to bear arms, and the safety of the students and staff are the reasons students feel like weapons should be allowed on campus.

Self defense should be on the minds of everyone while in college. Students should always be aware of their surroundings. They should always know whom they are associating with. Allowing weapons on college campuses would make parents feel safer about sending their child off to college, thus allowing them to maybe go to the college of their choice. The right to bear arms gives everyone the right to “bear arms” for their own personal protection and defensive reasons. The right to bear arms is protected by the United States constitution and states that people have the right own arms for personal protection. Are colleges violating the students’ right to bear arms? The safety of the students is always the main priority for colleges across America. Violence is going to happen at every college campus. When you get a bunch of 18 to 22 year olds in the same place, something is bound to happen. Allowing students to carry a concealed weapon would make students think twice before indulging in criminal activity. Students would realize that they are on the so called “same playing field” and would stop a lot of the violence or hate crimes that go on at these college campuses.
