Problem Statement:

Karen is concerned about the impact her decision regarding an employee’s request for his own office will have on her goals to establish her firm in the increasingly lucrative Taiwanese market as well as the rest of her employees.

Analysis:

Managing with the intention of producing positive results requires clear and concise planning of all resources including your employees. Karen Leary’s strategy to achieve this feat included implementing higher goals for her team and hiring someone to obtain business in a cultural market she knew nothing about. Karen did not adhere to the organizational culture she initially implemented with her office in her approach to developing the Taiwanese market. Karen developed an inappropriate connection with Ted Chung in the early stages of their relationship as she afforded him preferential treatment in various situations. Karen Leary’s and Ted Chung’s active listening skills are in need for improvement as both their low sincerity and listening skills has created a relatively superficial relationship between them.

Karen’s need for achievement through imposing aggressive goals to move ahead in the industry has caused a potential quandary with the integral cog known as her strategy. The notion of confidence before realism has overshadowed the initial concept of the company with the following:

• Karen changed the culture of the branch upon her arrival, as she felt it would conflict with her goals

• Karen leaned on new/young FCs, keeping tabs on their expected 200 calls/day and overseeing their customer strategy development

• Terminated several employees whom she believed could not follow the firm strategy.
