Questions

1. Compare and contrast acids and bases in terms of their H+ ion and OH‐ ion concentrations. Bases have a higher concentration of OH- ion than H+ ion. Acids do have a higher concentration of H+ ion than OH- ion. Solutions with equal concentrations of H+ ion and OH- ion are neutral.

2. Name two acids and two bases you often use. Bleach and Borax are 2 bases I use at home. Lemon juice and boric acid are 2 acids I use at home.

Questions

1. How did the surface area affect the diffusion of the cube? The larger the surface area is, the quicker the diffusion will happen. What about the volume? The larger the volume is, then the slower the diffusion will occur. What about the surface area to volume ratio? The larger or more volume, then the slower the diffusion happens. The smaller the cube, then the faster the diffusion will happen. Which of these had the greatest affect on the diffusion of the cube? The volume did have more affects than surface area did. The size of the cube does slow down the diffusion of the cube.

2. How does this experiment demonstrate the need for larger cells to divide? The larger cells do not have as much diffusion as quickly as smaller cells do.

3. For the three cubes shown below, determine their surface area, volume and surface area to

volume ratio. Then, circle the one you believe would be the most efficient and write a summary

stating why.

1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm

Volume = 1.5 ^ 3 = 3.375 cm3

Surface area = 6 x 1.5^2 = 13.5 cm2

SA:V= 1:4 (13.5/3.375)

3 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm

Volume= 3x2x2=12 cm3

Surface area = (2x (3x2) + (4x (2x2)) =28 cm2

SA:V = 1 : 2.333 (28/12)
