Learning Team 3, Case Analysis I

Introduction

Roy is John’s manager at a plastic molding company called Plastec located at Parker Industrial Park outside of Dallas, Texas. The company has little to no diversity as far as the racial make-up is concerned with the majority of employees being Caucasian and a few African-Americans. Recently, the area has experienced new races such as Hispanics, Asian, Bosnian, Serbians, Russians, and people from India who have settled in the area. For unknown reasons, the company has experienced a larger turnover rate. This has caused Roy and John to engage in deep thoughts and conversations about what is causing the large turnover. John, who is a frontline manager, has some ideas as to what is the cause as departing employees have provided some useful information on their reasons for leaving. Now, Roy is suggesting that both of them go to the director of the human resources department, Paul, in an attempt to revamp the company and find out what exactly is causing the high turnover rate.

Employment Laws to Consider

As Paul conducts an analysis of the company, he will find that racial diversity is a major issue. Racial diversity training should be conducted immediately to familiarize employees with the different races. This will serve as an educational tool as employees will be introduced to the different behaviors and skills that these ethnic backgrounds exhibit as well as focusing on acceptance and understanding of people with different ethnic backgrounds in general (Mathis, Jackson, & Valentine, 2014, 2011).

Since different ethnicities practice different religions, Paul should also ensure that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is not violated. For example, many people from Russia and India practice Islam. Islamaphobia, the fear and hatred for Muslims, can have a significant impact on the workforce (Mathis et al., 2014, 2011).
