Education is key…

The United States has become more aware of the need to educate one another on cultural diversity and promote multicultural education as part of a campaign to end cultural wars and provide equal education to all. With the influx of migrant workers, students from other nations who wish to learn in American institutions, free trade, arts and entertainment, and technology such as the internet, globalization continues to take place and we cannot ignore the need for understanding cultural differences.

When people from other countries migrate to the United States, the majority tend to rebuild their communities by isolating themselves and excluding other cultures from their environment. Still, more cultures are crossing over into American societies, as economic issues have Americans living at lower income levels. Business opportunities and education provides more interaction between groups as well. Furthermore, the younger minorities are assimilating to American values and traditions.

On the most part, cultures still tend to hold true to their heritage. Because of this, conflicts arise from misunderstandings and the fear of one’s own heritage and identity disintegrating. Violence against other cultures, which results in forced segregation, has been an issue. Other countries are not immune to the conflicts that have emerged from globalization, worldwide its effects have caused much discord among its people. America is seen as the biggest villain in a perceived move to have them assimilate to our culture (Foer 34). With different cultures sharing the same home, the result is an “us versus them mentality”. This mentality builds resentment and creates dissension.
