Climate change is the change in global climate patterns that have been evident from the mid to late 20th century onwards. This has been made apparent due to the lack of care of human behavior.

Climate change is caused by the increases of release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, thus throwing the planet’s delicate ecosystem off-balance, leaving the gases trapped in the Earths atmosphere.

As time passes, our climate is evolving and with each passing year, weather conditions are becoming more erratic, changing living conditions for the global community. Climate change has the potential to cripple the environment, our communities and the economy.

“Climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet today. A warming planet alters weather patterns, water supplies, seasonal growth for plants and a sustainable way of life for us and the world’s wildlife. Climate change has already started, but its not too late to take action. There’s still time for us all to be apart of the solution”(Earth Hour, 2013).

Climate change is an issue of justice and the common good because through catholic social teachings, that have been instilled in our psyche from a young age, we are to be stewards of the land and share all of God’s gifts with every individual. Due to the lack of stewardship and the participation for global solidarity it prohibits human flourishing.

Our climate is fluctuating due to the increased use in burning of fossil fuels, over-use of agriculture and land clearing. As stewards of our environment climate change is an issue of both justice and common good as we are preventing to provide a sustainable environment for future generations, those in developing countries and the poor.
