The U.S. market for personal computers is dominated by five main players including: Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Acer, and Toshiba. In 2008 these companies controlled 79 percent of the market. The PC market has experienced substantial growth over the previous decade, and it continued this growth through 2010. Competitors in the PC market offer diversified product lines including items such as desktops, notebooks, handheld devices, and workstations.

The MP3 market is dominated primarily by Apple who owned 71 percent of the market in 2008. Other players included SanDisk, Creative, and Microsoft. It was expected that the market for digital music players would continue through 2012. However, market growth is expected to eventually decline because of the large number of people who have already purchased the devices and the increasing number of cell phones that have the ability to play digital music and videos. Research indicates that most buyers base their choice of player on song capacity, multimedia capabilities, unit battery life, physical size, and ease of use.
