Week 1 iLab Report

The first objective in the LAN Modeling tutorial is Setting Up the Scenario. The final step in setting up your scenario appears below.

1. (30 points) Once your project is created (after Step 6 above), your workspace will contain a map of the United States. Your project and scenario name can be seen in ITGuruā€™s top window border in the form of Project: <project name> Scenario: <scenario name>.

Capture a screenshot of your new project workspace that clearly shows your project and scenario name, and paste it below.

2. (40 points) In college-level paragraph(s), describe how background traffic affects both e-mail data and VoIP data.

To start, we should first define what background and foreground traffic is. Background traffic is application data such as, FTP and P2P file sharing. While foreground traffic consists of web server, email and VOIP data. Background traffic has an effect on your overall network response times. In my analysis of networks I have seen the network traffic crawl to a point of many users complaints. The affect is different depending on the directional flow of the traffic. Whether the traffic sent, received or both simultaneously. Which can have a major affect of the response time of email and VoIP.

Background data transfer are known to be more data intensive then e-mail data and VoIP data. For instance, many companies do not send and receive emails larger than 20MB, sent at under 5Mbps. VoIP is even less than that, usually lower than 1Mbps. While company background file transfers can be over 10 Mbps, closer to 100Mbps on a LAN.

Imagine having a 20Mbps connection at your home. You begin downloading uTorrent files at a rate of 18 Mbps. This we have very noticeable effect on your...
