Design of Golden Gate Bridge

The Bridge is a landmark in the US. It was constructed on a mile wide stretch of water that connects the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. The bridge connects Marin country with the city of San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge is among the longest and tallest most beautiful bridges in the world.

The bridge is owned by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, which operates and maintains it as a toll facility. Over its more than half century history, the bridge has provided excellent services. New challenges of the bridge’s integrity such as seismic vulnerability have been discovered, and this has led to increase in maintenance.

The engineer who was in responsible for designing and constructing of the bridge was Joseph Strauss. The engineer had many challenges since he had little experience with the construction of suspension bridges. Therefore, other designers, engineers and architects contributed in the bridge’s design and construction.

In order for Joseph Strauss to build the Golden Gate Bridge, he would have to overcome an environment which was formidable. The rivers of Northern California which are fed by the heavy snows of the Sierras are only fed by one outlet. The water from the mountain flows into San Francisco Bay, and then proceeds to the mile wide gap which is called the Golden Gate. The waters collide head on with incoming force of the Pacific Ocean at the gate.

The Golden Gate Bridge’s construction began in 1933. New standards...
