Caring is the Most Basic and Important Skill

Nurses deal with nurturing and caring for peoples’ lives. If you are not fully prepared at treating other people’s life, you will not be able to give patients the medical care that they need. This is why nurses have to master their skills. Lack of knowledge and mistakes made, may lead to critically harming the patients. Since school started, I have spent a lot of time reading nursing books and studying for tests which we had every week. Sometimes, I complained to myself, about the workload that had to be done every day. However, now I have realized why many nursing students have to study hard and maintain their knowledge to help treat patients with utmost care.

Nurses can play a significant role in one’s health and life. Especially, caring is the most important aspect that a nurse should have. Nurses support patients physically, mentally, and spiritually by providing reassured presence, touch, active listening, spiritual care, family care, and comprehending the client personally. I believe that “Being there when the times are hard” and “Being with the patients when they need you the most” may help empathizing with the client much more effectively. Each patient is fighting alone against pain, depression, and struggling to recover from sickness. This is why the job of being a nurse has much more value, since they are the only people who cares and spends most of their time with patients in a hospital. Therefore, the nurse can be a healer and supporter for a vulnerable person with fragile mind and body. Using touch also makes the patient feel reassured. When I was having a hard time, one of my friends hugged me and said with warm comforting words, “I will be always on your side. Don’t forget that I will be there for you.” Although she could not settle my problems directly, she gave me the courage to overcome and surpass through those harsh times.
