Company History

J. C. Penny Company, Inc. is one of the largest apparel and home furnishing retailers in the nation. There are over 1,100 stores along with their website jcp.com where customers find a shopping environment that features “the most sought after collection of private, national and exclusive brands and attractions.” J.C. Penny was founded more than a century ago by James Cash Penny on the golden rule principle: treat others the way you would like to be treated- fair and square. J. C. Penny is currently at one of its lowest prices on the NYSE and has been steadily declining in price since May of 2013.

Belk was founded in 1888 in Monroe North Carolina with a five hundred dollar loan and three thousand dollars’ worth of goods taken on consignment. Belk is still family operated along with being traded publicly on the OTCBB market and has both Class A and class B common stock shares. Belk has more than 300 stores in 19 states, mostly in the south and Carolinas. Atlanta currently has the largest concentration of Belk stores. Even though Belk is publically traded more than 90% of all its stock is tie up in family of the Belk brothers. Belk is a middle class apparel retail store that uses its online store very little. They rely much more on the in store shopping experience rather than online retail.

Nordstrom is a upscale department store. It was founded by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin. Nordstrom was founded as a shoe retailer and has since expanded to include clothing, handbags, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics and fragrances. There are more than 250 stores in 34 states. Nordstrom has been steadily climbing in stock market prices since a large fall in 2009. Before the fall in 2009 Nordstrom has been steadily gaining on the stock market.
