Learning and Teaching Styles

After the last two weeks of discovering what type of learner I am. I have discovered that I am a Dynamic Learning–Doing and feeling, seeking hidden possibilities, exploring, learning by trial and error, self-discovery (About Learning, 1979). That my top five strengths are; woo, includer, significance, positivity and competition. (Rath, 2007). Also I found out that Mett’s Visual Modality Inventory tells me that I have strong characteristics of a Tactile/Kinesthetic Modality (Mett’s Modality Inventory). So by doing these three different types of exercises, I see that my style is all hands on activities and demonstrations, not lectures, it shows that I am a person that is a motivator that motivates on energy not just talking and that I am a person that likes to do trial and error on things. I am a person who teaches this way also, I love to have my students be involved everyday with the subject and the class. So I have them help teach the class because I feel that they will get more out of the subject that to hear me just talk about it. “Engaged students are usually happier than disconnected ones who have isolated tasks to do, and research confirms that engagement activates more of the pleasure structures in the brain” (Jensen, 2005).

My challenge is to relate to the student that learns from lectures and reading the book. This type of student is more of an Auditory or Visual learner. “Auditory learners learn the best by hearing things. Videos and audio recordings are great ways for this type of learner to learn. This type of learner will sit where they can hear information, but may not always look like they are paying attention. Reading out loud is another strategy for this type of learner.
