Azar Biography – Rough Draft

“Now I’m going to ask you this again,” violently repeated the interrogator.

“What are the names of your fellow activists?”

Azar gasped for air and tightly clenched both of her battered fists. “I don’t know,” she lied.

He continuously whipped the metal wire at the soles of her feet. She cringed in extreme and agonizing pain. The torture was unbearable. It went on for fifteen minutes, until she couldn’t feel anything. Her feet were tremendously swollen and numb, but at least the throbbing and pain dimmed down. She exhaled with relief, until she noticed the interrogator whisper to the Koran reader. She began to shake as she saw him reach out a sharp and pointy needle.

“Oh, you thought it was over?” he laughed. “Azizam, this will continue for years unless you give me some information.

Azar looked at him in disgust. He exposed his yellow crooked in teeth as he grinned maliciously. The florescent lighting emphasized the stubble on his beard and the stern look on his wrinkled face. How dare he call her sweetheart?

“Please, I don’t know anything. Why are you doing this to me?” she grunted in agony.

The torture continued for what seemed like hours until she slowly passed out. Before losing consciousness, flashes of memory came to her mind. Her mother brushing her hair at night, her brothers bringing her books from the library, playing with her friends on the schoolyard… Suddenly, she woke up to a bright light shining in her eyes. Was she in heaven?

Early Life

“Long live the king –” Azar immediately woke up from her nap and clapped both of her hands together during her classmate’s presentation on the Shah. The classroom burst with giggles, yet her teacher was unimpressed.

“Azar, meet me after class. I’d like to have a talk with you,” he frowned in disappointment.
