PROJECT TITLE: SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN KIANDUTU SLUM. (SHKS)

PROJECT TYPE: Environmental Management

PROJECT DURATION: 1 Month

PROJECT COST: 500,000 Kenya shillings.

STAKEHOLDERS: Kiandutu Community, Thika city council, Mount Kenya University students and committee, Local area chief.

BACKROUND INFORMATION

Kiandutu slum is the largest slum in Thika Sub-county at about 115 acres located at the heart of Thika town. It holds many people who migrated from Muslim areas in the North-western parts of Kenya looking for work in Nairobi. The area is known to be dangerous and insecure in some parts. Moreover it is a slum in the very sense that is characterized with “mabati” houses poorly spaced, even poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, and garbage stinking air. It is for these reasons among others that we decided this way the people residing there can be able to live comfortably and be able to take part in other advancements and for the betterment of Theca town in general.

OBJECTIVES

* Improvement of the drainage system

* Garbage collection and safe dumping

* Enhancing hygiene and sanitation through field training and sensitization of the community

APPROACHES

We chose the community organization approach as we saw this would be the best one to tackle the situation in the slum. This approach refers to the process of bringing the community together for the purpose of task accomplishment. Including the community in this project would make them feel as if it were their own project and therefore would take responsibility and maintain it long after we leave. The organizing efforts target all the residents of the Kiandutu slum. Hopefully the community will feel the need to change their situation and volunteer and be willing to take part.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
