Introduction

The role of management in an organisation is one of the most critical and important building blocks that define an organisations culture or way of doing things. According to Northouse (2001) the management style employed within an organisation helps shape various processes within the organisation in question. The approach used by a manager in most cases helps define how employees carry out their duties in both the short and long run. This implies that a manager has a lasting and significant effect on an organisation’s culture as managers in most cases usually leave their imprint on employees as well as organisational processes. As such, the management style adopted by a given leader shapes the approach of employees to various organisational processes and this has an effect on the culture of the organisation going forward. In addition Kiechel (2012) argues that the role of all managers at the place of work is to provide leadership. Leadership defines what and how the organisation will carry itself in the process influencing various organisational processes such as marketing, training and recruitment among others. An effective manager is one who has the capacity to guide or make his followers adopt a common or shared approach such as a vision or a departmental strategy among others. With this in mind, the essay seeks to critically evaluate the extent to which recruitment practices in organisations can be influenced by management styles. An in -depth look into what recruitment is will be presented. An overview of what management styles are will follow and thereafter a look into the extent to which line management influences the recruitment process in organisations will be presented in an in-depth manner.
