Mattel Toy Recalls

Summary

On august2, 2007, Mattel, the largest toy company in the world made three recalls. The very first recall of these three recalls were made by Fisher price, a division of Mattel just before the publication of a report “Global recalls’ by John yang of NBC’s which represented the public anxiety over the risk to children safety. The stakeholders of Mattel took several actions during these recalls. On July 6, 2007, Mattel halted the production of toys and conducted an investigation because it discovered lead paint on some of its toys through a European retailer. And in July 18, 2007, Mattel gave a New York Times reporter a tour in its manufacturing and in its safety test lab in china. During the investigation Mattel claimed that it was not aware of the fact that whether the issue was an isolated problem or if there was a larger scale impact. Mattel contacted with its retailers who were distributing the affected toys, because on July26, Mattel’s executives received data that confirmed that there was a safety risk in 83 of these products. The communication was made public on august 1, 2007. Mattel claimed that the issue was self identified and it made the Consumer Product Safety Commission aware of the problem. David Allmark, the general manager of Fisher Price, committed to vigorously investigate the problem and he also indicated in a statement that the recall was accelerated, which gave Fisher Price the opportunity to quarantine approximately two-thirds of their 967,000 toys before they were sold to the public. On August8, Mattel identified the vendor responsible for the recalled toys, and this incident made Mattel seriously sad. Because this vendor named Lee Der Industrial Co. worked with Mattel for 15 years, and it knew every regulation and program of Mattel. But something went wrong which made Mattel to recall of the toys.
