Week 6 Homework

1. Contrast power and authority.

(1)Power is the ability to influence people or cause them to do things they wouldn't ordinary do. There are two types of power. Coercive power and persuasive power. Authority by contrast is the exercise of legitimate power. (2)It is the power to enforce laws, exact obedience, command, determine, or judge.

2. Contrast leadership in tribes and chiefdoms.

(1)Tribes do not have a single leader with authority. They are egalitarian. Tribal leaders rely on persuasive power. In tribal societies they usually use headmen and big men for their leadership. (2)Chiefdoms are a type of society with a hereditary office of chief. Authority is bestowed upon the person who holds the office. In a Chiefdom with authority comes leadership.

3. Describe two informal means of societal control.

(1) The most common forms of informal societal control are ridicule, gossip and ostracism. (2)Ridicule is done with words or actions intended to evoke contemptuous laughter at or feelings toward a person or thing and ostracism is the act of banishing or excluding. Both of these work well in small societies. In larger societies people are able to change groups so they wouldn't be able to be affected by ridicule, gossip and ostracism.

4. Describe and give an example of one dimension of social stratification.

(1) Social stratification is a society with unequal access to resources within the same gender and status group. The dimensions of social stratification are economic status or wealth, power status, and prestige or social status.

5. What was the crime of Cephu, and how does the way the Mbuti dealt with Cephu illustrate informal means of social control?
