Introduction

This is a review of a case study regarding how the Carolinas Healthcare System handled the issue of rising blood cost that is affecting the finances of their laboratory service line. The system initially tried to negotiate with the American Red Cross, which was the dominant supplier of blood in their area. However, the attempt to come up with a resolution was unsuccessful. And because of this, the healthcare system started to look for alternative to solve the problem, which is to consider the concept of “independent blood center”, (Swayne, Duncan & Ginter, 2008, p. 476-477). Thus, the creation of Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC)

SWOT Identification

For this case study, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) will be identified and analyzed in order to evaluate the system’s strategy’s weaknesses and strengths and identify other strategies that could be a possible alternative to the current plan. SWOT analysis involves listing the organizations strengths and weaknesses as well as perceived external opportunities and threats (Swayne, Duncan & Ginter, 2008, p. 248).
