Abstract

“Although racial discrimination at a point or time in the criminal justice processing, there is still little evidence of racial disparities resulting from systematic, overt bias”( Sampson, Robert J., and Janet L. Lauritsen. 1997). With that being said, in a lot of cases it is just people being in the wrong places at the wrong times. This essay will depict or draw a picture for the readers to better understand how graphs and other statistical data can or cannot promote racial profiling.

Is there really a question to be answered here? This is simply a graph showing how African Americans pair up with the white race on street crimes and white collar crimes. Looking on the graph in the text book,(Michael L. Benson and Sally S. Simpson, 2009. Pg. 175) states that blacks are overrepresented for more of your lower level offenders than that of your higher level offenders. What is the cause of this? Some people think it is because of social status and others think it is because of education status.

Social status is one of the biggest reasons for the large numbers of the white community being in on all white collar crimes. Maybe it is because the black community is very seldom in a position of the middle and upper social classes. What is meant by this is that it is said in the book that “very few African American’s are put into corporate positions such as CEO’s, presidents and other top management positions”.( Michael L. Benson and Sally S. Simpson, 2009.pg.175) The white races are overpopulated in these positions and when the African Americans are put in these positions they are heavily supervised and do an exceptional job. The opportunity then for an African American to commit a white collar crime is less likely to happen.

African Americans are seen more in lower class positions because of schooling. Most African Americans didn’t go onto college and get a degree. Schooling is another big reason for these disparities. Look on the wall in any of...
