Introduction:

In the past few years RFID has been successful to find its applications into the technical and maintenance operations of the aviation industry. In the near future RFID technology will also be applied to the maintenance operations of the commercial aviation industry. RFID technology can be considered as a tool and like any other tool it should be used in a proper manner for a good return on investment (ROI) which is very critical from the business point of view. The aviation industry needs to quickly realize the importance of using RFID technology and extract the advantages it can provide.“The airline industry has been working formally on RFID since 2003, starting with Boeing and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to understand what requirements the FAA would have for the industry to move forward” (Khomenko, et al., 2013). Boeing and Airbus are the two original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the aviation industry, which have already started using RFID technology on aircraft parts. In any type of aviation industry civil, military or general high standards are required to prevent accidents. RFID technology along with effective maintenance management plays a major role to avoid the accidents and control the aviation costs. Both civil and military aircraft maintenance have started the use tool tracking solutions with help of RFID.

Issues (Aviation Industry):

International Air Transport Association (IATA) currently needs to focus on a few major issues to be solved in order to proceed with RFID technology into their operations. For example, universal acceptance of RFID technology globally. Need to maintain a smooth flow of operations, because the addition of a new technology into the operations always creates problems and complexities.

Requirement of a higher data security and working together as a unit with different people from other organizations will increase the efficiency and reduce the costs to the operators, other users.
