Is Democracy Really Possible?

Democracy is known as the best governing style in the world and many countries have democracy in today’s world. The right of freedom of speech and vote are seen as the most important rights as a modernized society. On the other hand, lots of people agree that the real democracy cannot be applied because of many reasons such as indirect way of choosing or unfair elections. Because of these kinds of reasons, people started to think about the perfection of democracy and started to offer new governing systems. In my opinion, the wrongness of democracy stems from the economic poorness and uneducated voters. So that, real democracy is only possible in places where there is economic equality, welfare and educated voters.

As a first argument, we can introduce the problem with the voters that are easily swayed by propaganda, promises, campaigns and bribes. If the voters of a country are poor and uneducated, policies of the governments will not be important for them because the only desire they think will be money. When people are hungry, they do not care about the future or the sake of their countries. As an example, In Turkey, AKP gives coals or white goods to the poor part of Turkey before elections. In such situation, we cannot talk about the real democracy.

In the second place, if the economic situation of a country is not good, there will not be security and people will behave harshly each other because of different ideologies. In democracy we express our thoughts easily; however, if one group has the power on the others, people with different ideologies will be suppressed and the right of freedom of speech –one the most important elements of democracy- will be lost. In such a situation, the regime will be handed by one group and it will resemble to the monarchy.
