The management style at MHMRA (Mental Health Mental Retardation

Authority of Harris County) is no one of quality. Total Quality Management was not a practice for MHMRA as opposed to companies that has adopted it and have received The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Federal Express Corporation received the award in 1990 in the area of service. According to Baldrige National Quality Program (2002), “Federal Express constantly adheres to a management philosophy emphasizing people, service, and profit, in that order; the company achieved high levels of customer satisfaction and experienced rapid sales growth” (para. 1 - 14). MHMRA in these same terms does not. “The management of Federal Express is setting ever higher goals for quality performance and customer satisfaction, enhancing and expanding service, investing heavily in advanced technology, and building on its reputation as an excellent employer. Company leaders are increasingly stressing management by fact, analysis, and improvement” (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2002). MHMRA in the terms of quality performance, expanding and enhancing service, investing heavily in advanced technology and building a reputation as an excellent employer and adhering to a management philosophy emphasizing people, service, and profit where the company achieves high levels of customer satisfaction and rapid growth is something they do not include in its goals as Federal Express does. MHMRA is not a company that takes its employees feelings and well being into consideration and does not empower their employees as Federal Express obviously does.
